International Project Based Learning Opportunities List

Travel as a teacher can be tough. There are opportunities that exist that allow teachers to travel abroad, gain an international perspective, and build their resume all in one shot. These programs are highly competitive but they do allow the individual teacher to become more experienced in the realms of education. They are professional development chances that you should not pass up. Good luck in the application process!!!!
The Fullbright Distinguished Awards in Teaching Program provides funding for highly accomplished US. primary and secondary level educators to take part in an intensive professional development program for three to six months abroad. The Fullbright Distinguished Awards in Teaching Program is sponsored by the U.S. Department of State, Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs and is administered by the Institute of International Education.
This program is to help teachers gain the fresh perspectives and experiences that they need to help their students grow and better understand the world they will inherit.
The Gilder Lehrman Institute promotes the study and love of American history through a wide array of programs and exhibitions for teachers, students, historians, and the general public. From weeklong seminars and other professional development opportunities to traveling and online exhibitions and recognition of great teachers and scholars, Gilder Lehrman is your gateway to American history, online and in person.

They have compiled a list of programs of various lengths and costs for teachers to gain international experience. Some are as short as a week, others are longer. 

The Korea Society aims to further develop the teaching of Korea in k-12 schools across the U.S., thereby enhancing the overall curricula. The Fellowships provide a unique opportunity for participants to develop a critical and engaging eye into modern day Korea while maintaining proper perspective on the nation's rich history.



NEH funds a wide variety of programs that can help you expand your humanities knowledge, engage in concentrated research, or improve your classroom teaching.


There are opportunities for short term assignments under the Peace Corps Response Program. Use your skills in areas of the world where they need you.



The mission of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s (NOAA) Teacher at Sea Program is to provide teachers hands-on, real-world research experience working at sea with world-renowned NOAA scientists, thereby giving them unique insight into oceanic and atmospheric research crucial to the nation. The program provides a unique opportunity for kindergarten through college-level teachers to sail aboard NOAA research ships to work under the tutelage of scientists and crew. Applications for 2015 open up on September 1, 2014.

Asian American Resource Center- Austin

The purpose of the center is to provide cultural spaces , resources, services, and educational programs through an Asian American Pacific Islander perspective that bring Austin's divers communities and surrounding areas together. 

Asia Society Texas
The Asia Society provides educational opportunities for students, teachers, and the general public to gain the opportunity to learn about the diverse and rich history and culture of Asia.


For almost a century, world affairs councils have spearheaded a nationwide non-partisan, non-profit grassroots movement to foster understanding and citizen engagement in international affairs and as well as involving interested citizens in an exchange of ideas, knowledge and understanding of global issues. Each year, half a million Americans directly benefit from world affairs councils’ programming and events.



They have compiled a list of travel opportunities for teachers. Travel lengths and competition for spots in the various programs may vary.

World Cultures Austin

This is a collection of cultural events and resources  for Austin and Central Texas. They have links t and locations to art galleries and museums, community groups, cultural centers, music resources, and ethnic grocery stores.
